Why Your Deep Work Blocks Are Too Long—and How to Fix Them

The Pomodoro Technique tells us to work in 25-minute sprints with 5-minute breaks, taking a longer 15 to 30-minute break after four sessions (Pomodoro, Wikipedia). Both are extremes that fail in the real world. The 25-minute sprint isn't enough time to get into the weeds of a complex project, and a 4-hour block is a recipe for burnout if you're not already a deep work athlete. The sweet spot? It's somewhere in between—and it's backed by research on attention and breaks.

Imagine You're a Project Manager with a Report to Write

Let's get concrete. You're a project manager at a mid-sized tech company. It's Tuesday morning, and you have a high-stakes quarterly report to write. It requires deep analysis of the last three months of metrics, a clear narrative, and a forecast for next quarter.
