Should You Plan Every Minute of Your Day? The Case for Time Blocking

Here's how I'd combine it with time blocking. Let's say you're a marketing manager. You write down six tasks: (1) finish quarterly report, (2) review ad copy, (3) call client, (4) plan team meeting, (5) respond to emails, (6) update project tracker. You prioritize: report first, then client call, then ad copy, then meeting plan, then emails, then tracker. You block 90 minutes for the report, 30 minutes for the call, 60 minutes for ad copy, 30 minutes for meeting plan, 30 minutes for emails, and 30 minutes for tracker. That's 4.5 hours of work. You have 8 hours. The rest is buffer, breaks, and interruptions. That's realistic.

The biggest mistake is treating the plan as sacred. It's a hypothesis. When it breaks—and it will—you adapt. The second mistake is planning without prioritization. The third mistake is ignoring your energy. You can't brute-force focus for 10 hours. You need breaks, sleep, and alignment with your chronotype.
